UNIFORM & APPEARANCE REGULATIONS

1.010 PURPOSE

The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure is to establish uniform and appearance standards for all sworn personnel of the Los Santos Police Department.

All Department personnel shall wear only Department-authorized uniforms, equipment, insignia, and identification while performing official duties unless specifically exempted by Department policy or authorized by a supervisor.

Personnel shall maintain a professional appearance at all times. Uniforms shall be clean, serviceable, properly fitted, and worn in the manner prescribed by the Department.

Compliance with this Standard Operating Procedure is mandatory for all sworn personnel.


2.010 GENERAL UNIFORM STANDARDS

Personnel shall report for duty in the uniform prescribed for their assignment unless otherwise authorized.

Uniforms shall:


Only Department-approved equipment shall be worn while in uniform.

Uniform components from different uniform classes or specialized assignments shall not be mixed or altered unless specifically authorized by Department policy or a supervisor.

Civilian clothing shall not be worn with identifiable Department uniform components unless authorized.



2.020 UNIFORM CLASSES AND AUTHORIZATION

The Department authorizes the following uniform classes:

Class A
The formal dress uniform worn during ceremonies, official inspections, funerals, promotional ceremonies, court appearances when directed, and other occasions designated by the Department.

Class B
The Department's standard long-sleeve duty uniform.

Class C
The Department's standard short-sleeve duty uniform.

Utility Uniform
The Department-approved tactical uniform authorized for specialized assignments, tactical operations, warrant service, training exercises, and other approved duties.

Personnel shall wear the uniform prescribed for their rank, assignment, and duty status.



Police Officer I
Police Officer I personnel shall wear the Department-issued Class B uniform while performing routine patrol duties unless directed otherwise by a supervisor.

Police Officer II+
Police Officer II+ personnel are authorized to wear either the Class B or Class C uniform while performing routine patrol duties unless directed otherwise by a supervisor.

Sergeants
Sergeants are authorized to wear the Class B or Class C uniform appropriate to their assignment.

Command Staff
Lieutenant and above may wear the Class A, Class B or Class C uniform or approved business attire when authorized.

Specialized Assignments
Personnel assigned to specialized assignments are authorized to wear the uniform prescribed for their assignment.

Uniform class changes for Patrol personnel may be directed by the Chief of Police, Bureau Commander, Watch Commander, or Shift Supervisor based on operational needs, weather conditions, or special events.



2.030 GROOMING STANDARDS

Personnel shall maintain a neat, clean, and professional appearance while on duty.

Personnel shall maintain personal hygiene consistent with a professional law enforcement appearance.

Hair shall be clean, properly groomed, and shall not interfere with the proper wear or function of Department-issued equipment.

Facial hair shall be neatly maintained and shall comply with Department policy.

Visible tattoos, jewelry, or other personal adornments shall not detract from the professional appearance of the Department or interfere with the safe performance of official duties.


2.040 SPECIALIZED ASSIGNMENTS

Personnel assigned to specialized details may wear uniforms approved for their assignment.

Specialized assignments include, but are not limited to:


Specialized uniforms shall only be worn while assigned to those duties unless otherwise authorized by the Department.



2.050 UNIFORM EXEMPTIONS

Personnel assigned to undercover, plainclothes, or other approved assignments may be exempt from the requirements of this Standard Operating Procedure.

Temporary uniform exemptions may be authorized by a supervisor whenever operational necessity requires.

All exemptions shall be limited to the duration of the authorized assignment unless otherwise directed by Command Staff.

Department uniforms shall not be worn while off duty unless authorized by the Chief of Police, Bureau Commander, or for official Department functions.

Personnel may wear the uniform while traveling directly to or from duty.



2.060 UNIFORM INSPECTIONS

Supervisors shall ensure personnel under their command comply with this Standard Operating Procedure and shall take appropriate corrective action when violations are observed.

Personnel reporting for duty with improper uniforms, unauthorized equipment, or deficiencies in appearance shall be directed to correct such deficiencies prior to assuming duty.

Repeated or intentional violations of this Standard Operating Procedure may result in disciplinary action consistent with Department policy.
